The majority of Thornton is a working, blue collar community, where most of the students have not wandered far outside of the city limits. Their perspectives overtly reflect an insular latino/a work ethic and world view, especially when it comes to equality and race. Many students have expressly voiced that they view that equality is a myth. They value lighter skin color, where students with darker complexions are usually made fun of or less valued. There is also a schism between more American Latinos/as and newly immigrated students, especially those students with thicker accents. My CT and I are constantly addressing these racial issues between our students. This is the broader social views/contexts that makes up and frames Julia’s community in which she lives and grows.
