Julia said that the reason she was given an IEP was because she is a slow learner. She explains that she was given an IEP when she went to school in Clayton, another school in the Mapleton School District. She was not at grade level so she was put into a slow learners class when she came to York International. She claims that she was falsely placed into the "slow learners class" (her own words) because her mother restricted her from learning like her fellow students. Julia explains that she is the third child which makes her the baby of the family and for some reason her mother had the deficit mentality that she could not do certain things. Her mother has come to regret preventing her from learning in the general classroom because it made her behind everyone else. Since the last interview, Julia switched out of the "Slow learner class" and is much happier. She says that her grades are good: A's, B's, C's, and an F. She explained that the F was because she accidentally placed her homework in the wrong bin and she is currently with her teacher to correct that grade. She feels she is doing alot better homework/ project wise because they are giving her less projects which she says helps her focus on the assignment.
